This is Dennis Cook, the Callington Town Cryer and proud owner of a fine full beard….which he had saved off to raise money for Primrose. He raised nearly £1500!
Above and beyond the call of duty and in about five years he’ll do it all again.

10/07/07 - We are very appreciative of the support we receive, all of which is devoted to Primrose Breast Care Centre at Derriford Hospital. There, having raised half a million pounds to create the Centre and to bring all the breast care services together, we now fund new equipment, maintenance contracts, some specialist consumables and training for surgeons and radiologists which is required as new procedures are developed.

We work to keep Derriford’s Primrose Centre at the cutting edge of technology and able to provide the best possible treatment and care. Before long new procedures become standard and we are soon faced with a new challenge requiring new equipment and more money.

This is what we are working for at the moment….

TheDSRS.
We are currently preparing to buy a Digital Specimen Radiography System! Used in theatre this machine is capable of reducing the time a patient is under anaesthetic and the duration of an operation. In a matter of a few seconds the machine carries out an analysis which currently can take 40 minutes or more. This is good for the individual patient and will allow more procedures to be carried out.

The DSRS costs £53,000 of which Primrose will give £25,000.

Biopsies are the way that we diagnose all breast cancers nowadays.  The use of the very best needles means that we more often get an answer that it is right first time and only much more rarely nowadays do we have to resort to surgery to get a final answer.   This means that women know what is going on much faster, but it does come at a price.     [Dr Jim Steel. Consultant Radiologist.]
The needles cost in the region of £170 each and are not re-usable!
Last year Primrose spent £18,000 and we hope to increase this to £25,000 this year.

This is likely to be a growing demand. Dr Steel would like to carry out all biopsies using the Mammatome needles when he can. For Primrose, this will mean a substantial, annual commitment which in turn will require a substantial and consistent level of income.
