ABOUT US

Established in 1997, Primrose was founded by a group of surgeons and women, who, from personal experience, recognised the need for a specialised service. They set up the Primrose Appeal and raised more than half million pounds needed to provide a Breast Care Centre at Derriford, able to provide comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and care.

The Centre was formally opened in April 2001 and since then The Primrose Foundation supporters, (many patients themselves) have continued to raise money. The skill and dedication of Primrose staff and the continuing support of the Primrose Foundation have together ensured that Primrose Centre a service which is among the very best.

A long term commitment.

To keep the Centre at the cutting edge we must continue to raise substantial funds every year. New procedures and new equipment is constantly being developed. Not only must the equipment be bought but the staff must be trained in the procedures to use it. The equipment must also be properly maintained.

Every year something new.

In recent years Primrose Foundation provided funds for the purchase of new sophisticated X-ray equipment, the first in the South West. The League of Friends of Derriford Hospital provided money for specialised biopsy equipment acquired at the same time. Together, these devices enable speedier, more accurate and more comfortable diagnosis

Our current appeal is to raise the money needed to continue to enhance the equipment available for local patients.

The Primrose Breast Care Centre

10 years on. The past 12 months have seen dramatic changes, the most obvious is the new layout which now provides reception and a large and comfortable waiting area. A great deal of thought has been given to improving the ambiance and comfort of the all rooms in which patients and their companions spend so much time.

The Primrose Foundation has met the cost of air conditioning in the waiting areas, furniture, decoration and artworks throughout the Centre and at the permanent Screening Centre at the Guildhall, Plymouth.

The Guildhall Screening Centre replaces the mobile unit which used to tour the city and it is expected to increase the number of women who respond to their invitation for screening.

A new mobile screening unit tours the towns and rural areas.
